Bit Depth & Color Sampling
10-Bit 4:2:0
10-bit 4:2:0 video captures 1,024 shades per color channel, but chroma is subsampled at a quarter of the luma resolution, meaning less color data is stored. This format offers better color depth than 8-bit 4:2:0 and is commonly used for consumer-grade recording and streaming, but it has limitations for intensive color grading and keying.
10-Bit 4:2:2
10-bit 4:2:2 video captures 1,024 shades per color channel, with chroma sampled at half the horizontal resolution of luma, which helps preserve more color detail than 4:2:0. This format strikes a balance between color accuracy and file size, making it ideal for professional broadcast, recording, and moderate color grading work where efficiency and quality are both important.
12-Bit RAW (Logarithmic)
12-bit Log recording captures over 68 billion colors while using a logarithmic gamma curve to preserve more dynamic range and highlight/shadow detail in a visually compressed form. This combination provides maximum flexibility in post-production, especially for color grading and matching footage across different lighting conditions.
8-Bit 4:2:0
8-bit 4:2:0 video stores 256 shades per color channel and reduces color resolution by sampling color information (chroma) at one-quarter the rate of brightness (luma). This format is efficient for compression and streaming but offers limited flexibility for color correction and grading compared to higher bit-depth and chroma subsampling formats.
Codecs
AVC
AVC (Advanced Video Coding), also known as H.264, is a widely used video compression standard that balances high video quality with efficient file sizes, making it ideal for streaming, broadcasting, and video storage. It achieves compression by reducing redundancy within the video data, which helps maintain quality while keeping file sizes manageable for various platforms and devices.
HEVC
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, is a video compression standard that offers improved compression efficiency over its predecessor, AVC, by reducing file sizes while maintaining high video quality. It is widely used for 4K streaming, video conferencing, and storage, as it provides better compression for high-resolution videos without sacrificing detail.
N-RAW
N-RAW is Nikon’s proprietary RAW video format, designed to capture high-resolution footage with the flexibility and quality of RAW while offering more efficient compression than traditional uncompressed RAW formats. N-RAW records 12-bit linear RAW video directly from the camera sensor, preserving maximum dynamic range and color data—ideal for demanding post-production workflows like advanced color grading and visual effects. It supports resolutions up to 8K at high frame rates while maintaining relatively manageable file sizes, thanks to Nikon’s efficient encoding. N-RAW is optimized for performance and storage, giving filmmakers access to RAW-quality footage without the extreme storage demands typically associated with uncompressed formats. It is supported by major NLEs such as DaVinci Resolve, allowing seamless integration into professional editing pipelines.
ProRes
ProRes is a high-quality video codec developed by Apple, widely used in professional video production for its excellent balance of image quality and compression efficiency. It is known for its fast editing and playback performance, as it’s optimized for real-time processing in non-linear editing systems (NLEs) like Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Avid Media Composer. ProRes is favored in professional filmmaking, broadcasting, and post-production due to its robust quality and ease of use in high-demand video environments.
ProRes RAW
ProRes RAW is a professional video codec developed by Apple that combines the flexibility of raw image data with the performance of ProRes compression. It captures high-quality, unprocessed image data from a camera sensor, providing filmmakers with greater control over exposure, white balance, and color grading in post-production. ProRes RAW is especially popular in workflows that require high-quality raw footage but need a more efficient and editable format for real-time editing in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, and other compatible software.
Compression
Long-GOP
Long-GOP (Long Group of Pictures) is a video compression technique that reduces file size by storing only the changes between frames rather than every individual frame. It uses a combination of I-frames (intraframes with full image data), P-frames (predicted frames), and B-frames (bidirectional frames) to efficiently compress video over a sequence of frames. This structure allows for significantly smaller file sizes compared to All-Intra (All-I) compression, which encodes every frame independently. However, Long-GOP can be more processor-intensive to edit, since reconstructing any given frame may require decoding multiple surrounding frames.
N-RAW HQ
N-RAW HQ is Nikon’s high-quality compressed raw video format, offering 12-bit video capture with extensive dynamic range and post-production flexibility. It delivers near-lossless image quality while maintaining more manageable file sizes compared to uncompressed RAW formats. N-RAW HQ is ideal for professional filmmakers seeking high fidelity footage for color grading, VFX, and detailed editing workflows.
N-RAW Normal
N-RAW (standard) is Nikon’s proprietary compressed raw video format that captures 12-bit video with high dynamic range and flexibility for post-production. It offers smaller file sizes compared to ProRes RAW and other uncompressed formats, making it efficient for storage and editing. While slightly more compressed than N-RAW HQ, the standard version still delivers excellent image quality suitable for most professional video applications.
ProRes HQ
ProRes HQ is a high-quality version of the ProRes codec, offering 4:2:2 chroma subsampling with higher bitrates for improved image fidelity compared to the standard ProRes 422. It strikes a balance between high-quality video and manageable file sizes, making it suitable for high-end editing, color grading, and broadcast workflows.
ProRes RAW HQ
ProRes RAW HQ is a high-quality version of ProRes RAW, offering less compression and higher bitrates for even better image fidelity and dynamic range preservation. It is ideal for professional workflows that require maximum flexibility in color grading and post-production, while still benefiting from the efficiency of a compressed raw format.
