RED DIGITAL CINEMA

RED Digital Cinema, Inc. is an American maker of digital cinema cameras, headquartered in Foothill Ranch, California. Jim Jannard, the founder of the eyewear company Oakley, established it in 2005 as RED.com, LLC. Nikon Corporation acquired all of its membership interests on April 8, 2024, and RED now operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Nikon.

RED announced its first camera, the RED ONE, at the 2006 NAB Show and began shipping it in August 2007; it recorded 4K in RED's own REDCODE RAW format. The smaller DSMC system followed in 2009 with the EPIC and SCARLET, then the DSMC2 family in 2015. The KOMODO, announced in 2019, introduced a global shutter, and the V-RAPTOR of 2021 has an 8K VistaVision sensor.

In announcing the acquisition, Nikon cited RED's RAW compression technology, its color science and its Academy Award. Since February 2025 RED has offered Nikon Z-mount versions of the V-RAPTOR [X] and KOMODO-X alongside its Canon RF-mount models.
