Sony

Sony Group Corporation

Sony Group Corporation is a Japanese company whose businesses span consumer and professional electronics, image sensors, video games, film and television, and music. Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita founded it in Tokyo in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation); it took the name Sony Corporation in 1958 and became Sony Group Corporation in 2021, when its electronics business became a separate company, Sony Corporation.

Its group companies include Sony Interactive Entertainment (PlayStation), Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sony Music Group and Sony Semiconductor Solutions, which makes the CMOS image sensors used in Sony's own cameras and in many other makers' cameras and phones.

In film and video, Sony developed broadcast cameras and recording formats for decades. Its CineAlta HDW-F900, the first HD camera to record 24 fps progressive, was used to shoot Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. Sony entered interchangeable-lens photography in 2006 by acquiring Konica Minolta's camera business, released the first full-frame mirrorless system (α7 and α7R) in 2013, and introduced the VENICE digital cinema camera in 2017.
