The Tiffen Company
The Tiffen Company is an American, family-owned maker of camera filters and imaging accessories for photography, motion picture, television and broadcast production. Sol Tiffen founded it in Manhattan in 1938, and his brothers Leo and Nat joined the business. It moved to Long Island and has been based in Hauppauge, New York, since 1979. Andrew Tiffen, Nat Tiffen's grandson, became president and COO in 2024, with Steven Tiffen as chairman and CEO.
Besides Tiffen filters, the company owns the Steadicam, Lowel, Domke, Davis & Sanford, Stroboframe and Zing brands, which cover camera stabilizers, location lighting, camera bags, tripods, flash brackets and camera covers. It also has a technical center in Burbank, California, and an office at Pinewood Studios in England.
Tiffen first sold filters and adapter rings built around other makers' glass; in 1951 it introduced its own glass filters made with its ColorCore process. Nat Tiffen and Ira Tiffen each received Academy technical awards for filtration. In 2000 Tiffen acquired Steadicam, the stabilizer that Cinema Products Corporation introduced in 1975, and its Steadicam Volt system received a 2025 Academy Scientific and Technical Award.
