ARRI Recording Media
ARRI's recording media strategy is grounded in its 2018 acquisition of Codex, the workflow company that had supplied capture systems for ALEXA bodies for years prior. The current product family centers on the Codex Compact Drive β available in 1TB and 2TB capacities β which is the native medium for the ALEXA Mini LF and ALEXA 35, supporting ARRIRAW and Apple ProRes recording at the sustained data rates those cameras require. Earlier Codex Capture Drives, including the SXR generations used with ALEXA SXT and ALEXA 65 systems, remain part of the broader ecosystem and are supported through dedicated dock readers that integrate with post-production transfer software.
A defining feature of the ARRI and Codex approach is the close coupling of media, encoding, and downstream workflow. Codex High Density Encoding (HDE) offers a lossless reduction in ARRIRAW file size that operates within Codex's own production tools, allowing teams to manage storage and shuttle drives more efficiently without altering image data. Drive readers, format converters, and asset management software are designed as a single pipeline rather than as discrete accessories, reflecting ARRI's view that recording media is part of a verified capture chain rather than a generic component.
