Firmware
A public beta of Blackmagic Camera that adds Apple ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ recording to the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Blackmagic published it as a beta, and no later stable release notes name the feature; the stable current release for this camera remains 8.1.
Adds automatic rotation of the user interface for vertical video, a 9x16 frame guide, remapping of the L-Fn button on MFT lenses, a software-update progress bar, Blackmagic RAW reference stills during recording and playback (replacing CinemaDNG stills), improved lens and autofocus performance, and a fix for HDMI VIC codes. Earlier releases added Q1 and Q3 Blackmagic RAW constant-quality recording and Generation 5 color science (7.3). Later changes for this body appeared only in public betas (8.6 network, webcam and Blackmagic Cloud features; 9.8 Apple ProRes RAW recording).
Adds Q1 and Q3 Blackmagic RAW constant-quality recording and Generation 5 color science to the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K and 6K, plus an RGB histogram, color-channel clipping indicators, false color, LCD calibration and dimming, and improved autofocus and focus peaking.

Blackmagic Design Digital Cinema Cameras
Blackmagic Design entered the digital cinema market with a focus on accessibility and post-production integration, aiming to make high-quality image capture more attainable to a wider range of filmmakers. Building on its foundation in color grading and editing software, the company’s cameras were designed to deliver cinematic image quality within a streamlined, data-centric workflow. This approach emphasized open recording formats, straightforward operation, and strong connectivity with the company’s DaVinci Resolve ecosystem.
Central to Blackmagic’s impact is its focus on color science and file flexibility. The introduction of Blackmagic RAW provided a high-efficiency, visually lossless codec that retained extensive image data for grading and compositing. Coupled with the company’s own color management and wide-gamut standards, this format encouraged consistent results from acquisition through post. Blackmagic’s cameras—ranging from compact handheld models to modular production systems—share a unified design philosophy centered on dynamic range, user control, and affordability.
Rather than competing solely on hardware specifications, Blackmagic Design has focused on improving the overall creative workflow. Its cameras often integrate recording media, monitoring, and software tools in a single system, minimizing technical barriers between production and post. This emphasis on workflow efficiency, image latitude, and cost transparency has allowed Blackmagic Design to play an influential role in shaping the expectations for modern digital cinematography, particularly among independent and small-studio filmmakers.
