  • Blackmagic Design Extended Video Gen 5 / Rec.709

    Blackmagic Generation 512 stops10-bit recommended
    SDRQuick TurnaroundBroadcastDocumentary

The middle setting between Video and Film under Generation 5 color science. It carries more latitude than Gen 5 Video while remaining quick to cut, and shares the Generation 5 Rec.709 container with the Video setting rather than the wide gamut the Film setting uses. That makes it the option for work wanting some grading room without moving into a log container.

    Curve: Extended Video Gen 52022

The middle setting between Video and Film under Generation 5 color science, carrying more highlight and shadow information than Video while keeping a contrast curve close enough to cut without a log grade. It shares the Generation 5 Rec.709 container with the Video setting rather than the wide gamut used by Film. It suits work wanting some grading latitude without a log workflow — documentary and multi-camera broadcast in particular.

    Gamut: Rec.709Industry Standard · 1990

Defined in ITU-R BT.709 in 1990 to give high-definition television a single colorimetric target as broadcasters moved off analogue standards. Its primaries were chosen to be reproducible on the CRT phosphors of the period, so all three sit inside the spectral locus and every color it defines is physically realisable. It is the smallest space in this base, and the reference every wider gamut here is measured against. In practice it is a delivery target rather than a capture space: grades finish in Rec.709 by default for broadcast, web and any non-HDR delivery.

  • Blackmagic Design Film Gen 5 / Wide Gamut Gen 4/5

    Blackmagic Generation 513 stops12-bit recommended
    HDRCinemaTheatrical DeliveryVFX

Blackmagic's current cinema pairing, on Generation 5 bodies including the URSA Mini Pro 12K, Cinema Camera 6K and PYXIS. Generation 5 carried the wide gamut over from Generation 4 unchanged, so the difference from the Gen 4 Film pairings lies in the tone curve and rendering rather than in the container. It is the setting that keeps the full sensor range for grading rather than delivering a finished image.

    Curve: Film Gen 52022

Blackmagic's current Film gamma, introduced with Generation 5 color science on the URSA Mini Pro 12K and Cinema Camera 6K. It pairs with the Generation 4/5 wide gamut, which Generation 5 carried over from Generation 4 unchanged — so the difference from the Gen 4 Film curves lies in tone and rendering rather than in the color container. At around 13 stops it is the log-style option in the Generation 5 range, intended to be graded rather than delivered directly.

    Gamut: Wide Gamut Gen 4/5Proprietary · 2018

Introduced with Generation 4 color science in 2018 and carried unchanged into Generation 5, which is why this record is named for both. It covers 2.37 times Rec.709, with an imaginary blue primary at y = -0.082, and serves the Pocket, URSA and Cinema Camera bodies on either generation. Because the gamut did not change across the generations, Gen 4 and Gen 5 material differs in tone curve and rendering rather than in color container — a distinction that matters when matching footage from bodies of different vintages.

  • Blackmagic Design Video Gen 5 / Rec.709

    Blackmagic Generation 512 stops10-bit recommended
    SDRQuick TurnaroundBroadcast

The Video dynamic-range setting under Blackmagic Generation 5 color science. The change from the Generation 4 pairing is not only in rendering: Generation 5 replaced the wider, partly imaginary Video primaries with true Rec.709, so this pairing sits in the delivery container exactly. It produces a broadcast-ready image with minimal grading, and material from it will not match Gen 4 Video footage without a conversion.

    Curve: Video Gen 52022

The Video dynamic-range setting under Blackmagic Generation 5 color science. Its container is Rec.709 exactly, not merely close to it — Generation 5 replaced the wider, partly imaginary primaries the Video setting used under Generation 4. It is a ready-to-use rendering rather than a capture curve, producing broadcast-style contrast straight out of the camera. The generation change is what matters in post: Video material from a Gen 4 body and a Gen 5 body sit in different color containers and will not match without a deliberate conversion.
