Canon Lens Adapters
Canon's lens-adapter program developed alongside the EOS R mirrorless system, which Canon launched in 2018 with the RF mount and an accompanying family of EF-to-RF mount adapters that allowed users to migrate decades of accumulated EF and EF-S optics onto the new bodies. The lineup includes the standard Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, the Control Ring Mount Adapter that adds a programmable aperture or exposure ring, and the Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter with circular polarizer or variable ND drop-in options. Canon also produces mount adapters for the Cinema EOS line, including PL-to-EF and EF-to-RF cinema adapters for select bodies.
The adapter strategy reflects Canon's emphasis on cross-system continuity: rather than orphan its large EF user base when moving to mirrorless, the company engineered RF-side adapters with full electronic communication, autofocus, image stabilization, and aperture control across the entire compatible EF lineup. The drop-in filter adapters extend lens functionality by moving variable ND and circular polarizer placement to the mount, freeing front threads on telephoto and prime lenses that would otherwise require oversize filters or matte-box solutions — a packaging decision that has influenced how Canon shooters approach in-camera neutral-density work.
