Sony FE 400mm ƒ/2.8 GM OSS Photography Lens with E-Mount

Overview
The Sony FE 400mm ƒ/2.8 GM OSS Photography Lens with E-Mount is a super-telephoto prime covering Full Frame sensors. Super-telephoto focal lengths reach subjects that cannot be approached, the working range of wildlife and field sports. A fast ƒ/2.8 maximum aperture separates subject from background and keeps shutter speeds up as the light falls, closing to ƒ/22. Optical stabilization steadies the frame, widening the range of shutter speeds that can be used handheld. Autofocus lets the camera's own subject detection drive the lens, which is what makes it usable for tracking moving subjects and for video. It mounts via E-Mount. Closest focus is 8.9 ft, for a maximum magnification of 1:6.2.
Features
Key Features
Super Telephoto Full Frame Coverage
The lens covers Full Frame sensors. A super-telephoto field of view reaches subjects far outside the action, which wildlife and field sports depend on.
ƒ/2.8 Maximum Aperture
A fast ƒ/2.8 aperture separates a subject from its background and holds shutter speed up in poor light, and the lens closes to ƒ/22.
Autofocus
The lens focuses under the camera's control, so hybrid shooters can use the body's own subject detection and tracking rather than pulling focus by hand — the difference between catching a moving subject and losing it.
Optical Image Stabilization
Optical stabilization compensates for hand movement, extending the range of shutter speeds usable handheld and steadying the frame for handheld video.
1:6.2 Maximum Magnification
A maximum magnification of 1:6.2 sets how large a small subject renders on the sensor, with a closest focus of 8.9 ft.
Optical Design
11-Blade Diaphragm
11 blades hold the iris closer to a circle when stopped down, which keeps out-of-focus highlights round rather than polygonal — visible in portrait backgrounds and night work.
Mount & Build
E-Mount
The lens mounts via E-Mount, which sets the bodies it fits directly and those it reaches through an adapter.
Electronic Lens Communication
Contacts in the mount pass aperture, focus and focal length between lens and body, so exposure data is recorded to EXIF and in-camera corrections for distortion and vignetting apply automatically.
Fixed and Rotating Tripod Collar
A rotating collar carries the lens's weight on the tripod rather than the camera's lens mount, and turns the body between landscape and portrait orientation without re-levelling the head.
