ARRI
Arnold & Richter Cine Technik GmbH & Co. Betriebs KG
Arnold & Richter Cine Technik GmbH & Co. Betriebs KG, known as ARRI, is a German maker of motion picture cameras, lenses, lighting and camera support, based in Munich. August Arnold and Robert Richter founded it in Munich on September 12, 1917; the name combines the first two letters of each founder's surname. The founding families owned the company for more than a century until April 2026, when Thomas Riedel, founder and owner of the Riedel Group, acquired it. ARRI continues to operate independently from its Munich headquarters.
The ARRI Group is organized into Camera Systems, Lighting and Rental business units; ARRI Rental supplies camera, lighting and grip packages to productions worldwide. The company has received 20 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
In 1937 ARRI introduced the Arriflex 35, the first mass-produced reflex film camera, whose rotating mirror shutter gave the operator parallax-free viewing through the lens. Later film cameras included the Arriflex 16ST (1952), 35BL (1972) and 535 (1990). With Carl Zeiss, ARRI developed the Ultra Prime (1998) and Master Prime (2005) lenses. Its first digital camera, the Arriflex D-20, arrived in 2003, followed by the ALEXA in 2010.
